2 Peter

[Note: This is a working draft of the outline.]

I. Greeting (1:1-2)

II. Remember the apostle’s teaching: faith, knowledge and virtue will gain entry to an eternal kingdom with Christ (1:3-15)

III. Condemnation of false teachers: divine judgment is certain (2:1-22)

A. They bring on their own destruction (2:1-3)

B. Examples of God’s judgment against the evil and rescue of the righteous: fallen angels, Noah's generation, Sodom and Gomorrah (2:4-10)

C. Their irrationality and immorality leads them to follow Balaam (2:11-16)

D. Once freed from defilement through knowledge of the savior Jesus, they are now caught in even worse corruption (2:17-22)

IV. Further arguments that the world will be judged (3:1-10)

A. Remember predictions of the prophets and commandments of the Lord which you received through the apostles, which spoke of "scoffers" in the last days (3:1-3)

B. Against arguments from the eternal sameness of the world; God’s word created the earth out of water, reduced it to water in the flood and now upholds the world until the judgment by fire (3:4-7)

C. Against arguments from the "delay of the parousia":

1. Time is not the same with God as in human reckoning (3:8-9a)

2. The "delay" is God’s patience giving people time for repentance (9bc)

3. the day will come suddenly and the heavens and earth be destroyed (3:10)

V. Since we believe God’s promise of a "new heaven and earth" we live in holiness (3:11-15a)

VI. Paul’s letters agree with this teaching, through false teachers twist the meaning of difficult passages to lead people to destruction (3:15b-17)

VII. Final benediction (3:18)
