The studies themselves are not intended to be comprehensive or complete commentaries on the biblical passages, but rather a survey of the basic story line, a brief analysis on the features of the text that serve to communicate its message, and a summary of the theological communication of the passages as a basis for further reflection. That means that there will be a lot of interesting details of the biblical narratives that will not be directly considered. The bibliographical information and a brief comment are given for the main sources. Barclay, William. The Letters of James and Peter, The Daily Study Bible. Philadelphia: Westminster Press, 1958. This is an excellent source of devotional insight and information. It is easy to read, but deals with paragraphs rather than verses. Best, Ernest. 1 Peter, New Century Bible. Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1977. This volume is a very helpful source of information. It is the most concise of the top notch commentaries on 1 Peter. Davids, Peter H. The First Epistle of Peter, The New International Commentary. Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1990. This is a superb commentary by a young, rising evangelical scholar. Though up-to-date it is written in an easily understood manner. Kelly, J.N.D. A Commentary on the Epistle of Peter and Jude. Black's New Testament Commentary. London: A. and C. Black, Ltd., 1976. This is solid commentary with helpful insights from Greek word meanings and the Old Testament background. Marshall, I. Howard. 1 Peter, The IVP New Testament Commentary Series. Downers Grove, IL: Inter Varsity Press, 1991. This is an excellent expository commentary by a noted evangelical scholar. His applications of the text to daily life are especially helpful. Michaels, J. Ramsey. 1 Peter, Word Biblical Commentary. Waco, TX: Word Publishers, 1988. This is the most comprehensive contemporary commentary on 1 Peter. It provides considerable Greek text background. Michaels is also an evangelical scholar of renown. Selwyn, Edward Gordon. The First Epistle of St. Peter. 2nd edition. Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1981 reprint. This was the standard English commentary on the Greek text until recent years. Stibbs, Alan M. The First Epistle General of Peter, Tyndale New Testament Commentaries. Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1959. This slender paperback has a great deal of useful insight. |
