IsaiahI. Isaiah, The Man:A. He was from the Southern Kingdom of Judah B. His activity was centered in Jerusalem C. Had easy access to the kings of Judah: Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah D. His ministry was during the period of Assyrian dominance E. Primarily concerned with the failure of the nation, and especially its leaders, to be faithful to God. F. Known as the prophet of trust in God II. Isaiah, The Book:A. The book is from three basic time periods, although sections are not divided strictly chronologically B. 1-39, Isaiah, 740-700 BC 1. Calls for obedience and trust in God 2. Justice for the poor and oppressed 3. Warnings against foreign alliances 4. Anticipating God's righteous king C. 40-55, exilic period, 575-530 BC 1. Forgiveness for the nation's sins 2. Restoration of the nation 3. God as Creator/new things 4. Servant of the Lord D. 56-66, post-exilic, 530-500 BC 1. Warnings to the restored community 2. Calls to renewed commitment 3. Anticipation of final deliverance III. Key Passages In IsaiahA. 1:10-20 Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow. B. 7 A young woman is with child...and shall call his name Immanuel. C. 9 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light...shall call his name...prince of peace.
