1 Thessalonians

[Note: this is a working draft of the outline.]

I. Greeting (1: 1-2)

II. Thanksgiving for the faith, hope, and love of the Thessalonians (1: 3-10)

III. The example set by Paul’s ministry (2: 1-12)

IV. Condemnation of unbelievers who persecuted Christians and hinder the spread of the gospel (2:13-16) [Some scholars think this passage was added to the letter after Paul’s death and the destruction of Jerusalem because of its very negative portrayal of the Jews]

V. Paul’s desire to visit Thessalonica again has been thwarted (2: 17-20)

VI. Timothy’s visit and glowing report about the Thessalonians (3: 1-13)

VII. Exhortation: Live a life of holiness (4: 1-12)

VIII. Exhortation: Resurrection of dead Christians at the Second Coming of Christ so that all will be with the Lord (4: 13-18)

IX. Exhortation: Be watchful, since we do not know when the Lord will return (5: 1-11)

X. Exhortation: Relationships within the church (5: 12-24)

XI. Final greeting (5: 25-28)
