The Gospels

The Propers below are readings for Ordinary Time following Epiphany and Pentecost, numbered to help establish a seven day range of dates on which they can occur.  Propers numbering in the Revised Common Lectionary begins with the Sixth Sunday in Epiphany, excludes Sundays in Lent through Pentecost and Trinity Sunday, and resumes the Second Sunday after Pentecost, usually with Proper 4.  Since the date of Easter is variable between March 22 and April 25, some Propers are not used in certain years.  The Roman Catholic Lectionary and those based on it number the Propers differently.

In some cases, the Psalm Reading is replaced by a Responsorial Reading outside the Psalter.  These are marked with the color code below.  Note that there are three sets of readings for Christmas Day.  There is also a second set of readings for Easter when the Easter Service is in the evening.

In the Revised Common Lectionary the Synoptic Gospels are generally read semi-continuously in a given year:  Matthew in Year A, Mark in Year B, and Luke in Year C.  The Gospel of John is read periodically throughout the three year cycle. 

The Church Year begins with Advent in November/December.
